Pat McOsker Will Work to End LA’s Gross Receipts Tax

McOsker Supports the BTAC Recommendations

LOS ANGELES, CA- San Pedro firefighter Pat McOsker will work to eliminate Los Angeles’ gross receipts business tax that is harming the city’s economy, killing jobs and reducing tax revenue. McOsker supports the recommendation of the city’s Business Tax Advisory Committee, which recently released a study that calls for phasing out the tax.

“My top priority is turning around our economy and helping businesses create jobs,” said Pat McOsker. “LA’s gross receipts business tax is counterproductive and I will work to eliminate it. It’s one of many policies that makes our city unfriendly to businesses and actually lowers our city’s tax revenue.

"I support the phased elimination, and as Councilman I will require annual reviews over the course of the reduction process to track the business and job creation and ensure that elimination of the gross receipts tax actually results in a net increase in city revenues, as I expect it will."

“We must change City Hall so that we are helping businesses succeed, grow and hire more workers. Los Angeles has so many advantages, yet we’re falling behind neighboring cities. That’s unacceptable and that’s why I have released a detailed plan to create jobs and improve our economy, both in the 15th district and throughout the city."

McOsker’s economic development plan, entitled “Los Angeles is Open for Business,” is available on his website at http://patmcosker.com/node/10.

As president of United Firefighters of Los Angeles, McOsker has real experience on budget and economic issues through many years of negotiations with three mayors, dozens of councilmembers and scores of city staffers.

The report of the city’s Business Tax Advisory Committee is available here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/66348862/BTAC-Final-Report-on-Phasing-Out-Gross-Receipts-Tax-09-14-11.

McOsker has been a LAFD firefighter for 31 years and currently works at Fire Station 101 in San Pedro, where he was born and raised. This is his first run for public office.

Pat McOsker announces run for City Council

San Pedro, California – San Pedro-based Firefighter Pat McOsker announced his campaign for City Council today. McOsker intends to run for the 15th District Council seat formerly held by Congresswoman-elect Janice Hahn. McOsker is a 30+ year veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department and the President of United Firefighters of Los Angeles City. This is his first run for public office.

“I am running to take on the tough issues facing the City of Los Angeles,” McOsker said, “It is vital that we protect public safety in the City and it is time that we restore the public’s trust in local government. As a veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department who has never run for office before, I will fight any cuts to police and fire protection and work to bring long-needed reforms to City Hall.”

Pat McOsker, a national expert on fire station staffing, is running for City Council because he believes that it is wrong to cut police, fire and 9-1-1 emergency services funding to balance the City budget.

“I vow to end the City’s ongoing policy of reducing the number of on-duty fire fighters and paramedics at 22 fire stations every day,” McOsker said, “I will also work to restore funding for the L-A-P-D to keep more officers patrolling our neighborhoods and do more to provide gang prevention after school and job training programs.”

McOsker’s campaign team is led by General Consultant John Shallman, Pollster John Fairbank, and Field Consultant Sue Burnside: the team that led Janice Hahn’s campaign for Congress as well as her campaigns for L.A. City Council. McOsker’s Finance Director is Stephanie Daily-Smith, who also worked for Janice Hahn for Congress.

McOsker, who was born and raised in San Pedro, currently lives in San Pedro with his wife Carla. They have one son, Emmett, who recently graduated from Loyola Marymount University.
